The main objective of the CCS Baltic Consortium<\/strong> project is to significantly reduce CO\u2082 emissions generated in two European Union (EU) Member States \u2013 Lithuania and Latvia \u2013 by deploying carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. Currently, the Baltic States lack CO\u2082 transport and permanent storage infrastructure and are among the last coastal regions in Europe where such a system has yet to be developed. The project therefore aims to bridge this gap by establishing a reliable and sustainable CO\u2082 value chain that could be used by industrial companies across the Baltic States. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is well understood and an essential instrument for reaching decarbonisation targets, primarily in hard to abate sectors emitting large volumes of carbon dioxide (CO\u2082<\/span>), the most common of GHG. The captured CO\u2082 will be transported by rail and road tankers to the Port of Klaip\u0117da in Lithuania, where it will be temporarily stored at the CO\u2082 transshipment terminal. The terminal, being developed by KN Energies (Lithuania), will also be designed to receive small and medium volumes of CO\u2082 and will operate on an open-access basis \u2013 allowing other industrial companies to join this CCS value chain. From the transshipment terminal in Klaip\u0117da, liquefied CO\u2082 will be transported by ship to permanent storage sites in geological formations beneath the North Sea seabed. Maritime transportation of CO\u2082 will be carried out by Mitsui O.S.K.
