International energy terminal operator KN Energies has selected the Norwegian engineering company Aker Solutions as the service provider for front-end engineering and design (FEED) services related to the design and construction of the planned carbon dioxide (CO₂) transshipment terminal in Klaipėda.

Klaipėda CO₂ terminal project forms part of the CCS Baltic Consortium, which aims to develop the first cross-border carbon capture, transport, and storage (CCS) network in the Baltic region. To create a complete CCS value chain, the CCS Baltic Consortium project was established in 2022, with KN Energies acting as both coordinator and partner.

Once implemented, the project will enable CO₂ to be captured from various industrial companies across the Baltic region, transported to the terminal in Klaipėda, and shipped by sea to long-term geological storage sites located under the seabed of the North Sea.

The CO₂ transshipment terminal infrastructure in Klaipėda will commence its operations with two cement plants operating in Lithuania and Latvia. At the same time, the facility will operate on an open-access basis, allowing third parties to access the infrastructure and enabling additional sectors and companies to connect, thereby promoting the application of CCS technologies.

As part of the FEED, Aker Solutions will build upon findings from previous phase technical evaluations to further refine the technical design specification of the planned infrastructure as well as evaluate potential expansion routes for facility development.

“The successful procurement of a FEED contractor for Klaipėda liquid CO₂ terminal marks an important milestone in CCS Baltic Consortium development and commitment of KN Energies to further increase maturity of this project of EU Common Interest. I am confident that by combining KN Energies’ proven global operational experience in marine cryogenic and liquid terminals management, with Aker Solutions’ deep engineering expertise – built across decades of delivering complex CO₂, energy, and cryogenic infrastructure projects worldwide – places KN Energies in a strong position to provide efficient and scalable solutions for the Baltic region.

As the terminal advances into the FEED stage, KN Energies is reinforcing its commitment to providing reliable, safe, and customer-centric CO₂ logistics services for industrial emitters in both Latvia and Lithuania – supporting regional decarbonization ambitions and enabling a fully integrated cross-border CO₂ value chain,” said Linas Kilda, Chief Business Development Officer at KN Energies.

Aker Solutions has been designing and delivering CO₂ infrastructure projects since the 1990s, with experience spanning the full CCS value chain, from carbon capture integration to CO₂ transport, terminal and hub infrastructure, and permanent storage. As a systems integrator, the company continues to advance technical solutions that enable the efficient and scalable development of CCS.

“Building on more than 30 years of CCS experience, as well as learnings from first-of-a-kind projects such as Northern Lights, Brevik and Oslo CCS, we are proud to support KN Energies in realizing this flagship project which is of great importance to the Baltic region, as well as wider Europe,” said Henrik Inadomi, Executive Vice President of New Energies at Aker Solutions.

In 2024, the European Commission granted the CCS Baltic Consortium project the status of a Project of Common Interest (PCI), recognizing it as an important cross-border infrastructure project that makes a significant contribution to the implementation of European Union energy policy and climate objectives.

The project is co-funded by the EU under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Energy programme.

KN Energies is an international energy terminal operator that ensures safe and reliable flows of liquid energy products and liquefied natural gas (LNG) for users in the Baltic Sea region. The company helps clients worldwide develop sustainable energy infrastructure projects with its knowledge and skills. KN Energies currently operates three liquid energy product terminals in Lithuania and operates LNG terminals in Lithuania, Germany, and Brazil.

Aker Solutions is a Norwegian engineering company that provides integrated solutions, products, and services for the global energy industry. The company supports both traditional oil and gas projects and the transition to low-carbon energy, including offshore wind, electrification, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
